Intercom systems in accordance with DIN VDE 0834:
the new 2026 edition

DIN VDE 0834-1 was published in the 2026-08 edition. EFE participated in the revision as a member of the standards committee.

The effective date is August 1, 2026. For systems currently in the planning or construction phase, a transition period applies through August 31, 2028. Existing, properly constructed systems do not need to be retrofitted solely because of the new version; the standard does not apply retroactively. Maintenance, inspection, and the safe operation of the existing system remain paramount.

An Overview of the Most Important New Features

• Paging system zone. The structure of the paging system has been redefined. Each zone must be capable of operating independently and have its own backup power supply.
• Transmission paths between zones that are external to the system are permitted under seven specified conditions. This marks the first time that the use of existing IP networks has been regulated by standards; within the zone itself, a dedicated transmission path remains required.
• Planning documentation. A set of minimum standards specifies what the planning must include, supplemented by requirements for installation and shop-floor planning.
• Logging. Internal system events must be logged in a traceable manner.
• Visibility of signal lights. The requirement for ambient illuminance has been raised from 500 lx to 1,500 lx.
• Special Applications. New sections on accessible restrooms, as well as on correctional facilities and similar institutions.
• Qualifications and Responsibilities. Minimum qualification for responsible persons at DQR Level 4, including the operator’s designated responsible person and documented training of operating personnel.
• Appendices A through D, containing informative sample templates for planning, acceptance, and operation.

What Operators and Planners Should Do Now

• Review ongoing projects to ensure they comply with the transition period through August 31, 2028, and transition to the new version well in advance.
• Designate a responsible person and verify their qualifications.
• Update the planning documentation to reflect the new minimum requirements.
• Document the orientation and training of operating personnel.
